There has been  discussion on whether Kenya needs a national Public Participation Act or policy. There are drafts that had been floating around on the same. A few years ago I was part of a team that drafted the County Public Participation Guidelines for the Ministry of Devolution.

The guidelines provide a practical approach to undertaking public participation at the county level. They also offer pointers to the citizentry on how to hold county governments accountable on diverse fronts. I strongly believe that the national government should adopt the guidelines with relevant amendments to fit the national space; the currently public information and public engagement model by national government is wanting.
